The cave-mentrapped these mammoths in pits, where the skeletons still lie.Then by slow degrees man rose above the equal strugglewith the brutes. A spirit dawned within him; mind andsoul grew strong. He invented axes, spears, and bows, fash-ioning axe heads and arrow points of rough-chipped flint.This was what we call the Stone Age. Next, man learnedthe many uses of fire, and with it separated metals from theearth, and made far better weapons out of iron. Thus hepassed on to a higher stage of knowledge, which we call theIron Age, and was fairly started on that marvellous up-ward climb which has led him to our present civilization. I
