== What caused the parent choose not to have vaccine for their child in Australia ==

The problem of immunisation has gained wide popularity in the contemporary world. A lot of people are concerned with this issue annually. Consequently, there appeared different perspectives concerning the problem of immunisation. There are some people who totally support the idea, emphasising that it protects humans from unpredictable diseases. In contrast, there are other individuals who stick to the point that vaccines damage humans’ health. The aim of this paper is to suggest significant information about the parents’ attitude towards the vaccine in Australia.
The medical treatment is considered to be the essential part of Australian culture. The government pays a lot of attention to the quality of medical care in the country. Consequently, children’s health is not an exception. Nowadays, there are many medical programs that provide sufficient medical treatment for children. All children are obligatory to complete their immunisations in the National Immunisation Program Schedule till they reach five year old. The basic purpose is to provide the highest level of security for children in the country. According to the report, almost 90% of children are fully immunised in Australia. They are protected from the basic illness – measles. Consequently, 95 % of children have to be vaccinated against it. The report states that the local districts have less percentage immunised. The reasons can be the parent’s awareness of the particular issue.
Nowadays, almost everyone has access to the Internet, so he/she could monitor the latest news concerning various problems. Medical care is not an exception. Consequently, when Australian parents want to get more information about vaccination they come across the Australian Vaccination Network. This is a web site that was designed for providing sufficient information about various types of vaccination in the country. Moreover, they support the idea of the parents’ rejection concerning the child vaccination. According to the director of Australian Vaccination Network, the disease happens not because of the decrease in the vaccination quality, but because the vaccine is no longer relevant to the bacteria. In contrast, the Director of the National Centre of Immunisation Research and Surveillance claims that the vaccine works and it protects the immune system from the bacteria. Consequently, parents could not but realise what is better, to reject the vaccination or to use it.
The AVN WEB site suggests a wide range of information that parents look for. Nevertheless, parents are not sure whether the information is correct or not. Consequently, in July 2010, the website was highly criticised by the Health Care Complaints Commission. It was proved that AVN led the anti-vaccination campaign and tried to persuade individuals of the dangerous effects of the vaccine. Nevertheless, the website is not the only reason why parents refuse to expose their children to the vaccination. Another reason is connected with easy-going attitude towards the illness. They do not consider dangerous illnesses as the fatal ones. The bright example can be the measles disease. Many parents are not afraid of it since they overcame it in the childhood and everything was fine. Nevertheless, the statistics shows other results. In accordance with the World Health Organisation, measles is a leading reason of vaccine-preventable childhood mortality. In 2008, the highly contagious disease was responsible for nearly 450 deaths around the world every day-around 18 deaths per hour.
One more reason is connected with the disease itself. Parents stick to the point that a lot of diseases that individuals are vaccinated against are unique and it is unlikely that children can face them. In fact, such an assumption is true, but because of sufficient vaccination. The journalist Seth Mnookin suggests that there exists a paradox, namely the more sufficient the vaccines are the less important they seem.
Another remarkable reason is parents’ fear concerning the effects of the vaccination. To some extent it is right, since the vaccine can influence the development of the immune system. Nevertheless, the Australian government states that the vaccines are safer that the illness they restrain. The bright example can be the vaccination against meningococcal C. According to the National Immunisation Schedule, it is required to vaccinate children at the age of 12 months. Speaking about the side effects, one out of ten children can suffer from loss of appetite or fever. Nevertheless, by comparing it with the illness itself one out of ten individuals who undertake the mentioned illness dies. Consequently, there is a little percentage of the insufficiency of the vaccination, but in general it helps greatly.
The most important concern about the process of vaccination is its connection with autism. In 1998, Dr. Andrew Wakefield suggested a connection between the Measles, Mumps and Rubella vaccine and this disorder. The assumption was rejected a year later but the damage had been already done. Consequently, the connection between autism and vaccine was performed. That is why Dr. Dunlop denied the mentioned assumption. Numerous carefully performed studies and reviews have now been done that have found no relationship between the MMR vaccine and autism. Moreover, the contemporary study has not found the connection between the vaccine and autism yet.
Analysing the collective information, one may propose alternative solutions to the problem. The most significant step is to assure parents in the effectiveness of the vaccination. It is easy to fulfil it with the help of the mass media. The Australian government has to establish the campaign that will persuade individuals in the effectiveness of vaccination. Moreover, the government has to develop special information department that will provide necessary information for the individuals. The department should be responsible to suggest up-to-date information, news, and statistics concerning the particular issue. Furthermore, all parents should undergo annual medical examination together with the whole family. Medical examination will be responsible for determining the health state of each member of the family. Moreover, their main obligation will be to persuade parents in taking the vaccination since it is the effective way of prevention. More studies should be conducted in the field of medical vaccination in order to have clear understanding of the current situation in the country.
To sum up, the problem of vaccination is quite controversial. There are various points of view concerning the mentioned problem. On the one hand, a great number of people support the idea of taking vaccination against dangerous diseases. On the other hand, some individual are afraid to take vaccination because of certain reasons. The first reason is incorrect information about the particular vaccination. The second reason is an easy-going attitude towards the illness. The third reason is the uniqueness of the disease, while the last reason is the relation between vaccination and autism. The mentioned reasons cause misunderstanding of the whole concept of vaccination. Vaccination serves an effective prevention from the possible dangerous diseases and thus could be considered beneficial. That is why Australian government should try to persuade its citizens in the effectiveness of the vaccination. It will be possible to perform by providing advertisement campaign. The mass media are the most influential tool in the contemporary world. Consequently, if the government suggests the evidence of the effectiveness of the vaccination, most of the will not hesitate to expose their children to it. Assistance of governmental institutions may increase the level of people’s awareness dramatically.
